The Maison & Atelier Horta were designed by Victor Horta in 1898 to be both a family home and an architecture studio. Today they are home to the Horta Museum, an institution dedicated to celebrating the work of Brussels’ pioneering art nouveau architect. The house and studio, located on the rue Américaine in central Brussels, are maintained as they were when occupied by Horta and his family.
Horta uses very delicate wrought iron fittings to support the panes of the curved wintergarden. The utilitarian function of the metalwork is disguised by the addition of typically Horta whiplash elements.
Note the addition of lighting on the upright supports.
The steel structural elements of the balcony become part of the art of the house.
The curvilinear whiplash effect is very evident.
